The Indonesian society has not been wise in choosing its leader

On February 14, 2024, the Indonesian society collectively held a general election. After four presidential and vice-presidential debates, the public was obliged to choose one of the candidate pairs. Unfortunately, the previous debates were largely disregarded, especially by those uninterested in the election. Most Indonesians have not been diligent in selecting their leaders.

As future leaders of the nation, many candidates offer social assistance such as money, basic necessities, or other forms of support to win over the people. Sadly, this aspect often garners more attention than the candidates' performance or backgrounds. Many Indonesians, especially those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, choose leaders or representatives based on the social assistance they receive. However, social assistance is not a measure of a candidate's ability to lead the country effectively.

According to a survey, Indonesian voters rarely change their preferences after watching election debates. Moreover, the public is perceived as unable to critically evaluate candidate pairs based on their vision, mission, and backgrounds. Many people are swayed by biased speeches or videos favoring one candidate. Additionally, there has been a recent trend of celebrities entering politics and running for public office. This leads many people to vote based on the popularity and reputation of these entertainers

Furthermore, the presence of fanatic supporters is concerning. These supporters often create provocative news or videos that influence public opinion. It is also unfortunate that there are many cases of ballot fraud during elections. Typically, these fraudulent acts are committed by fanatic supporters or polling station officers who are paid to cheat.

These issues arise due to a lack of understanding among the public regarding each candidate. People must be able to scrutinize and consider the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate. They should also gather as much information as possible about the candidates' visions, missions, and backgrounds. The public needs to change and improve their mindset so that elections are perceived as fairer and more accurate.
